NHL Power Rankings, January 18

The 2011-12 NHL season is rolling along, and so are a number of teams who currently sit at the top of the standings. The power rankings for this week reveal few changes at the top, but does feature a new #1.

Remember, the top 10 get the fancy graphics, and the other 20 get bupkis

1

Boston Bruins

29-13-1 (59 pts)

The Bruins have been cooling off a little bit as of late, but they’re still a difficult team to beat. They have quite a few weapons and look eager to try to defend their Stanley Cup. It helps when the two goalies with the highest save percentage in the league are on your team.

2

St. Louis Blues

27-12-6 (60 pts)

There aren’t many teams hotter than St. Louis has been since bringing in a new coach; their 1-0 shutout of the Stars helped them improve to 2nd in the league in goals against.

3

New York Rangers

29-11-4 (62 pts)

The Rangers are 2-2 in their last four games, including a bad loss in Montreal, but they sandwiched it with two dominating shutout performances over Toronto and Nashville. Marty Biron logged one, and Henrik Lundqvist the other.

4

Detroit Red Wings

30-15-1 (61 pts)

The Red Wings are hot, and goalie Jimmy Howard leads the NHL in wins at the moment.

5

Vancouver Canucks

28-15-4 (60 pts)

If you’re looking for the NHL’s best team on the power play, you found it right here in Vancouver. Also, the Sedins have already combined for over 100 points so far this year.

6

Ottawa Senators

26-16-6 (58 pts)

Hard to argue with 8-1-1 in their last ten games, including wins over the Rangers, Leafs, and Flyers.

7

Philadelphia Flyers

27-13-4 (58 pts)

The Flyers are plugging along and maintaining a pretty good point level, though they still have the problem of giving up too many goals. That was not the case against the sagging Wild on Tuesday night, however.

8

Chicago Blackhawks

27-13-6 (60 pts)

The Blackhawks have gone just 4-4-2 in their last ten games, stalling out a little bit in what was an impressive run to that point. They seem to be getting back on the winning track, though, with three wins in their last four.

9

Nashville Predators

26-16-4 (56 pts)

Nashville had a six-game win streak at Madison Square Garden snapped on Tuesday night, but it was just their second loss in their last ten games.

10

San Jose Sharks

26-12-5 (57 pts)

The Sharks need to work on their 28th-ranked penalty kill if they’re going to accomplish anything this year.

And all the rest — 11-30

11. New Jersey Devils, 26-17-2 (54 pts)
12. Los Angeles Kings, 23-15-9 (55 pts)

19. Dallas Stars, 24-19-2 (50 pts)
20. Phoenix Coyotes, 21-18-7 (49 pts)
21. Calgary Flames, 21-20-6 (48 pts)
22. Winnipeg Jets, 21-20-5 (47 pts)
