10 Signs That 9-to-5 Isn’t For You

Conventional 9-to-5 jobs are not for everybody. Some people just don’t like to be restrained by the man, while others just don’t like the whole corporate atmosphere. Here are some signs that you might be one of those people who needs to be involved in unconventional work with flexible or different hours, or be your own boss entirely.

10 Signs a 9-to-5 Job Isn’t for You

1. You feel stifled even by “business casual” attire.

2. You’re tired of your Outlook schedule filling up with meetings regarding the scheduling of future meetings.

3. You have a countdown clock on your computer desktop which indicates how long it is until 5pm. Every day.

4. You are overcome with despair when you receive an important business-related e-mail at 4:45pm on Friday afternoon, and you know your boss will expect you to handle it.

5. You’ve said to yourself, “Writing reports? What is this, junior year of high school?”

6. Every time you look in the mirror in your office’s bathroom, you feel as though your stare is vacant and your soul has been crushed.

7. You know the quickest route through your building to your car and have timed it down to the second so that you may preserve as much non-work time as possible.

8. You think — no, you know your boss is an idiot, you’ll never kiss enough ass at work to get ahead, and you’ve got a tremendous business idea they don’t deserve.

9. You are aware of the exact percentage of your life you have spent at your cubicle and lament that you’re never getting it back.

10. You begin wondering if working at Taco Bell would be more exciting than your current profession.

If any of this has happened to you, the good news is that there are unconventional jobs out there. Perhaps you have a talent for writing that you’d like to cultivate, or any other art form in which you are talented. Maybe you want to be your own boss, or perhaps you want something with varying hours and a loose dress code to keep things interesting.

Not every job in the world is a 9-to-5 desk job, and they clearly do not appeal to everybody. If you’re desperate for a change and don’t want to feel like you’re wasting your life in a cubicle, check out Monster or SimplyHired, amongst other fine sites, and see if anything interests you. Of course, consider your potential level of pay and any lifestyle changes that will be made necessary by getting a new, unconventional job first.
